INTRODUCTION:

            A.        The Christian is referred to as a soldier; II Timothy 2:3-4

                        1.         As a soldier, he is to arm himself for battle; Ephesians 6:10-17 (11)

                        2.         Every Christian is to “fight the fight of faith”; I Timothy 6:12; Jude 1:3

            B.        In out text Paul warns Timothy to fight that he might “lay hold on eternal life”;  

                        I Timothy 6:12

            C.        Our lesson “The Battle for Eternal Life”

 

I.          GOD PROVIDES EVERYTHING NEEDED FOR THE BATTLE:  II Peter 1:3

            A.        Armor; Ephesians 6:11

            B.        The weapon of warfare; Ephesians 6:17

            C.       Strength to endure; Philippians 4:19; 4:13

                       1.        The prophecies which went before; I Timothy 1:18

                       2.        Not carnal, yet, powerful weapons; II Corinthians 10:4-5

             D.      The Christian must trust in God, that the battle might be won;  Proverbs 3:5-6

 

II.        SPIRITUAL WARFARE BEGINS WITH THE INDIVIDUAL:  II Timothy 4:7     

            A.        Good soldiers must prepare; II Timothy 2:15

                        1.        Ready to use the sword at all times; I Peter 3:15

                        2.        Vigilance is needed to win the battle; I Peter 5:8-9

            B.        A soldier, unprepared for battle is doomed; Luke 14:31-32

            C.        Soldiers fight side by side in order to win the battle; Luke 14:31

 

III.       WORKING TOGETHER TOWARD ETERNAL LIFE:  I Corinthians 15:58

            A.        Soldiers support one another:  When one is wounded another often carries him off the battlefield; Acts 20:34-35

            B.        Soldiers fight with one purpose:  To survive the battle and win the war  II Timothy 4:6-8 

                        1.         Christian warfare is the same; I Corinthians 9:26

                        2.         We can win the war together; Song: “Onward Christian Soldiers”

 

CONCLUSION:

            A.        Christianity has always been individuals working as a unit; I Corinthians 1:10

            B.        Let us fight the fight that we might be with God in eternity; I Timothy 6:11-12
