INTRODUCTION:

          A.     Christianity for many is: “a formal gathering; traditional pattern; or habit”

          B.     Form religion (tradition) is not always pleasing to God; II Timothy 3:5

                 1.     The multitudes; Matthew 7:21-23

                 2.     Many claim to know God and yet refuse Him; Matthew 6:33; II Timothy 3:5

                         a.     To know God is to obey; I John 2:3-4

                         b.     Knowledge according to God’s will; Romans 1:16; Colossians 2:23

          C.     Many are “Going Through the Motions” without knowing or caring what God has to say

 

I.          “GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS”: BECOMING A CHRISTIAN

            A.        Father’s religion:  “If it’s good enough…”

                        1.         Satisfies the flesh; Colossians 2:23

                        2.         Appearance of godliness; II Timothy 3:5

                        3.         Will not save; Matthew 7:21; James 1:22-25

            B.        God’s word tells us how:  Six part plan for salvation

            C.        No other way but his way; Romans 1:16-18

 

II.        “GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS”: AS A CHRISTIAN

            A.     “Christianos” = “A follower of Christ; like Christ; little Christ”

            B.      Many lay claim to being a Christian; Galatians 5:22-26; John 10:1-5

            C.      Must give our hearts to God first; Romans 12:1-2; II Corinthians 8:5; Proverbs 4:23; Joel 2:12-13

            D.     In teaching; Matthew 28:18-20

            E.     In benevolence;  James 1:27; Galatians 6:10

            F.     In attending services of the church; Hebrews 10:25-26

 

CONCLUSION:

            A.     Have you truly given yourself to the Lord? Romans 12:1-2

            B.      "Are We Just Going Through the Motions?”
