INTRODUCTION:

 

            A.        God created us as beings with choices to make:

                        1.         Moses told Israel to choose; Deuteronomy 30:19

                        2.         Joshua encouraged Israel to make to right choice; Joshua 24:15

                        3.         James tells us to consider God in our choices; James 4:15

            B.         God expects us to make wise choices:

                        1.         When choosing a mate; Ephesians 5:23; Genesis 2:18     

                        2.         The husband/father is given the role of spiritual leadership;

                                    Ephesians 5:23-25, 33

            C.         Joshua made the choice for himself and his family; Joshua 24:15

            D.        We are all accountable for the choices we make; Proverbs 1:28-32

            E.         What is involved in being “A Godly Father”?

 

I.          BEING A GODLY FATHER MEANS LIVING A GODLY EXAMPLE:

 

            A.        Solomon wrote; Proverbs 22:6

                        1.         “Train up” – “to initiate or discipline; dedicate (to god)”

                                    (Strong’s Concordance)

                        2.         “Initiate” – “to introduce first by doing or using; to teach the

                                       fundamentals of some subject by doing that thing” (Webster’s

                                        Dictionary)

            B.         Choosing godly habits and entertainment; Matthew 6:33

            C.         Children often follow the father’s lead; Ezekiel 20:24

 

II.         PAUL’S ADMONITION TO CHRISTIAN FATHERS: Ephesians 6:4

            A.        “Provoke not” – literally “stop provoking”

            B.         Being constant as a godly example; Romans 12:1-2

                        1.         Honoring God in all of ones’ chooses; Isaiah 28:13; Mark 7:6

                        2.         Make every action count; I Timothy 4:12

            C.         “Bring them up” means to “support them; lead them”; Matthew 6:33

            D.        “Nurture and admonition” – discipline and example; warning and instruction”

           

III.       DEMANDS FOR BEING “A GODLY FATHER”:

            A.        Be a godly example in every way; I Timothy 4:12

            B.         Be a godly teacher/trainer; Deuteronomy 4:9

            C.         Be the spiritual leader God intended for you to be; Joshua 24:15; Proverbs 5:1-2;                          

                       Ephesians 6:4

 

CONCLUSION:

            A.        No soul more important than the soul of one’s own child; Matthew 28:19-20

            B.         Let us be godly fathers and strive to lead our children to victory; Ephesians 6:4
