A.   “Sōma” = “the body (as a sound whole); a body of believers”

B     The physical body is the house of the soul; Genesis 2:7

       1.         It is temporary; II Corinthians 5:1

       2.         We are not at home in this house; II Corinthians 5:6-8

       3.         Our study deals with spiritual matters, “What Is the Body of Christ?”


I.     THE BODY OF CHRIST IS ONE BODY:  I Corinthians 12:13

       A.     Paul’s affirmation; Ephesians 4:4

       B.     Christ came to reconcile men into one body; Ephesians 2:14-16

       C.     One body with many members; I Corinthians 12:12

  1. Members are baptized into the body; I Corinthians 12:13

  2. Members “function as a sound whole”; I Corinthians 12:25-27

  3. Members working as a unit; I Corinthians 1:10

  4. Seven platforms of unity in the body; Ephesians 4:4-6

  5. Obedient believers following one rule of faith; Acts 2:41-42

II.         WHAT IS THE BODY OF CHRIST?  I Corinthians 12:27

        A.     A Matter of prophecy; Matthew 16:18

        B.     The body is the church; Ephesians 1:22-23

  1. A spiritual body to which all the saved are added; Acts 2:47
  2. As the body is one, so the church is one; Matthew 16:18; I Corinthians 12:12

       C.     Not Many bodies, but one:

  1. Christ is her head (ruler); Ephesians 1:22
  2. Members must remain connected; Colossians 2:18-19
  3. No place for doctrines or commandments of men;  Colossians 2:20-22; Galatians 1:6-9; 5:4

One rule of faith; Romans 1:16-17



           A.     Each member has a place; I Corinthians 12:27-30

            B.     All are to participate with others; I Corinthians 12:25-26; Ephesians 4:11-13

                  1.     Grow together in Christ; II Peter 3:18

                  2.     Bear fruit; John 15:1-6

            C.     We must grow to maturity; Hebrews 5:11-6:1


            A.The body of Christ is His church

            B. To be saved one must be a member of the Lord’s body
