INTRODUCTION:

            A. Man sees love in many types or degrees

            B. Greek language also speaks of types of love:

                      1. “A-gah-pa = “love; beloved; dear; devotedness”; John 3:16

                      2. “Fe-leh-o” = “to love; regard with affection; to like; to be a friend to”

                      3. “Eh-ros” = “erotic love (usually speaks of illicit relations of all sorts) Not a New Testament word but often mentioned in scripture; Galatians 5:19

                     4. “Ster-gay”= “love of family”

          C. This study looks at the “What is Love?”

I. LOVE CONTRASTED: IT IS PRE-EMINENT: I Corinthians 12:31

           A. Love “a-gah-pa” is the more excellent way; I Corinthians 12:31

           B. Christian actions have no value without love; I Corinthians 13:1-3

II. LOVE ANALYZED: CHARACTERISTICS OF LOVE; I Corinthians 13:4-7

          A. “Suffers Long” = “never impatient”; I Peter 3:20

          B. “And is kind” = “Never unkind”; Ephesians 4:32

         C. “Vaunteth not itself” = “Never Jealous”

         D. “Is not puffed up” = “Never shows off”; Galatians 6:3

         E. “Seeketh not her own” = “Never self-important”; Philippians 2:3-5

         F. “Slow to anger” = “Never easily angered”; James 1:19

        G. “Thinketh no evil” = “Never malicious in criticism”; Philippians 4:8

        H. “Rejoiceth in the truth” = “is not irritable but rejects false doctrine”; John 8:31-32

         I. “Beareth all things” = “Never holds a grudge”; Matthew 6:14-15

        J. “Believeth all things” = “Never self-righteous”

        K. “Endureth all things” = “Never gives up”

III. LOVE DEFENDED: IT IS PERMANENT; I Corinthians 13:8-12

        A. True love never fails; I Corinthians 13:8

        B. Biblical love is rewarded by the Father; I Corinthians 13:12

             1. Our love toward Him; II Timothy 4:6-8

             2. Other scripture; I John 5:13; Matthew 10:22

IV. LOVE EMBRACED: IT IS POWERFUL; I Corinthians 13:13

       A. Greater than faith = will be completed; Hebrews 10:23

       B. Greater than hope = will be fulfilled; Hebrews 6:18-20

      C. Biblical love will last forever; John 21:15-17

CONCLUSION:

      A. God’s love motivated him; John 3:16

      B. What will your love prompt you to do? I Corinthians 13:4-8
