“And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.  So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth” (Revelation 3:14-16).

There are many things which God is said to hate. The wise man in Proverbs wrote, “These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto Him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren” (Proverbs 6:16-19). These things are said to be sickening to God. Webster’s New World College Dictionary defines “abomination” as “an abominating; great hatred and disgust for; loathing; anything hateful and disgusting.” The definition implies that sin makes God sick at His stomach and will cause Him to break all relations with the offender. The brethren at Laodicea were told that God would “spue” them out of His mouth if they didn’t change their ways, (Revelation 3:16-22).

The Bible states that Jesus hated sin. We are told, “But unto the Son He saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of Thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed Thee with the oil of gladness above Thy fellows” (Hebrews 1:8-9). Jesus gave His body and blood so that man could be redeemed and have a home with God in heaven (Hebrews 12:1-3). Paul wrote, “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's” (I Corinthians 6:20). John stated that nothing which would defile could enter into the eternal presence of God.  He stated, “And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life” (Revelation 21:27).

The modern world has no problem with sin. Mankind seems to despise all that is good.  The Psalmist asked the question “Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?” (Psalms 2:1). The world we live in has drifted so far from God that even those who claim to belong to Him have set themselves in opposition to His inspired word. Paul warned Timothy “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. (II Timothy 4:2-4). Many in what we know as “the religious world, have come to embrace sin rather than to stand against it. Paul wrote, “Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good” (Romans 12:9). When God’s people fail to do that which is right in His sight they separate themselves from Him and all that is good. Jesus refused to acknowledge deeds done in His name without obedience to God’s will (Matthew 7:21-23).

“What Do You Hate?” The church at Ephesus had left its first love. John wrote that they had many good points and then stated, “Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent” (Revelation 2:4-5). One does not have to totally write God out of their lives to show what they love the most. Jesus stated, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).

“What Do You Hate? The scriptures tell us what to love and how to relate to sin! Paul wrote, “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners” (I Corinthians 15:33).  He also stated, “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you” (II Corinthians 6:17). John wrote, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever” (I John 2:15-17). Jesus stated, “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon” (Matthew 6:24).

Paul warned the brethren at Galatia that sin would cost them their soul. He gave a list of the “works of the flesh” (Galatians 5:19) and concluded, “of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:21). Because they had not kept the law Jesus taught the Pharisees saying, “Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not” (John 8:42-45).

When Jesus comes will He find us faithful? Will we be lukewarm? What Do You Hate? In what or in whom have you placed your first love?
