INTRODUCTION:

             A.         God has, from the beginning, given man work to do:

                         1.         Adam was told; Genesis 1:26-29; 2:15

                         2.         After the fall and decline of mankind, Noah was told; Genesis 6:14, 18, 22

                         3.         Jesus came to do the work of the Father; John 9:4a

            B.          Many deny the necessity of work as a part of salvation; James 2:17-18

            C.          What does the Bible say?  Our lesson “What Can I Do?”

I.          THE EXAMPLE AND TEACHING OF JESUS:

            A.        Man often fails to understand and/or misinterprets what he sees:

                        1.         The disciples saw a blind man; John 9:1

                        2.         They interpreted what they saw and assumed that sin was involved; John 9:2

            B.         Jesus tells them that no sin was involved; John 9:3

II.         “I MUST WORK THE WORKS OF HIM THAT SENT ME”: John 9:4

            A.        Jesus came to enlighten the world; John 9:5

                        1.          John had affirmed; John 1:1-10 (1-5)

                        2.         As the light, Jesus brought spiritual life; John 1:4; 8:12

            B.        Jesus lived and died to do the works of the Father; Philippians 2:6-8

                        1.         Jesus stated; John 10:17-18

                        2.         The Hebrew writer recorded; Hebrews 10:7

III.       THE URGENT NEED FOR WORK:  John 9:4

            A.        Jesus calls mankind to do the will of the Father; Matthew 7:21

                        1.         Called to obey the gospel; Romans 1:16

                        2.         Called to do the work of God; John 6:28-29

                        3.         Paul and Barnabas called to a special work; Acts 13:2

            B.         Every Christian is called to be a worker; James 1:25

                        1.         The letters to Corinth exhorted; I Corinthians 15:58; II Corinthians 9:8

                        2.         Paul wrote to the brethren in Thessalonica; II Thessalonians 1:11-12

            C.         Unless Christians work, the world cannot know God; Mark 16:15-16

            D.        Ask and allow God to give increase to my labor; I Corinthians 3:6-7

CONCLUSION:

             A.        To fail to work is sin; John 6:28-29; James 1:22; 4:17

             B.        We must not neglect to do the work of the Lord; Colossians 1:10; Hebrews 2:3

             C.         The writer of the letter to Corinth stated; II Corinthians 5:10

             D.         Are you doing the “work of the Father”? Matthew 7:21
