“What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!  Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?  But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.  And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.  I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.  For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.  What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.  But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. (Romans 6:15-20 NKJV).

An American Folk Song found within the pages of our hymnal, with no author listed, states, “I am mine no more, I am mine no more; I’ve been bought with blood. And I am mine no more.” The fact is that man has never belonged wholly to himself. When man is under sin, he belongs to sin or is a slave to sin. Jesus stated, “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it” (John 8:44 NKJV). When one responds in obedience to the gospel of Christ (Romans 6:1-11) he is freed from the bondage of sin and becomes a servant of God (righteousness).

The song states, “Jesus is my Lord, Jesus is my Lord; And he rules my life, And Jesus is my Lord.” Many want the benefit of Christ’s redeeming blood without committing to the will of God. Jesus tells us that it is not possible to be a child of righteousness without serving God. He stated, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). He also warned, “Not every one that saith unto Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy name? and in Thy name have cast out devils? and in Thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from Me, ye that work iniquity” (Matthew 7:21-23). Paul told the brethren at Galatia that it was necessary to allow God to rule their lives. He wrote, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). When we make Jesus Lord of our lives, He will be seen in the way we behave both in His house and when we are among people of the world. Paul wrote, “But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth” (I Timothy 3:15).

We often sing, “He will come again, He will come again; And He’ll take me home, Yes, He will come again.” When Jesus was comforting His disciples concerning His death and departure, He promised them that He would come back for them. He stated, “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in Me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there ye may be also” (John 14:1-3). Paul told the brethren at Corinth that when the Lord returned all the children of God would be changed and given a body that would be incorruptible. He stated, “Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory” (I Corinthians 15:50-54; See also I Thessalonians 4:13-18).

In his letter Peter gave a powerful picture of the coming of the Lord and the events of that day. He wrote, “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? (II Peter 2:10-12).

Are you a slave to sin, or have you given your life to Christ? “To Whom Do You Belong?”
