The Heart To Do The Will Of God

“Blessed are the undefiled in the way, Who walk in the law of the Lord!  Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, Who seek Him with the whole heart!  They also do no iniquity; They walk in His ways.  You have commanded us To keep Your precepts diligently.  Oh, that my ways were directed To keep Your statutes! Then I would not be ashamed, When I look into all Your commandments” (Psalms 119:1-6 NKJV)!

Many never come to the fullness of the joy that belongs to those who are in Christ. In his letter to the brethren at Philippi, Paul wrote, Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain. Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all. For the same cause also do ye joy, and rejoice with me” (Philippians 2:12-18).

To simply be baptized and to attend worship services from time to time is not enough to give one genuine joy in the Lord. If one defiles the way of God or becomes defiled in his lifestyle he cannot expect to find joy in his faith. The psalmist stated that to be happy “blessed” in the Lord, a person would have to walk in the Lord’s way “law” (Psalms 119:1-4). Jesus told the multitude that in order to receive the reward of the righteous it was necessary to do the will of the Father. He stated, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 7:21). Jesus also taught the importance of giving oneself wholly to God (Matthew 6:33; 7:22-23).

The psalmist found joy in keeping the will of God with his whole heart. He stated that the righteous would not walk in sin, but in the way of God, (Psalms 119:2-4). It is important that God’s people have “A Heart to do the Will of God.” The psalmist stated, “O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes! Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all Thy commandments. I will praise Thee with uprightness of heart, when I shall have learned Thy righteous judgments” (Psalms 119:5-7). Paul, in his letter to Timothy, wrote, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (II Timothy 2:15).

Paul encouraged the brethren in Philippi to have a heart to do the will of God. He told them to trust that God would supply their needs (Philippians 4:19). He encouraged them to think in a righteous way (Philippians 4:8). He exhorted them, telling them not to worry about trivial things but to pour their hearts out to God in prayer and promised that God would give them peace (Philippians 4:6-7). When the brethren trust God and allow Him to lead their lives they can find the peace and joy of obeying God. Paul stated, “Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice” (Philippians 4:4). Do you have A Heart to do the Will of God?
