INTRODUCTION:

  1. Greek word: “Dikaiosune” used 35 times in Romans
    1. “Righteousness; acceptance as righteousness; fair; equitable; virtue”
    2. With God, one is made righteous or he is unrighteous
  2. God possesses “inherent righteousness”; Romans 3:5
    1. Seen as faithfulness and truthfulness, consistent with His nature
    2. Shown in the death of Jesus; Romans 3:25-26
    3. God does not regard sin lightly; Romans 6:23
  3. Righteousness is “right action”; Romans 6:1-7, 17-18
  4. God’s righteousness revealed in the gospel is His way to justify mankind

Our lesson: “God’s Righteous Character”

I.          GOD’S WRATH IS REVEALED AGAINST UNRIGHTEOUSNESS: Romans 1:18

            A.        Unrighteousness is ungodliness:  A practice of life; Romans 1:32    

            B.        Unrighteousness is obeyed; Romans 2:8

            C.        Paul identified unrighteousness; Romans 1:29-32

            D.        Unrighteousness hinders; Romans 1:18

            E.         Unrighteousness commends (proves) God’s righteousness; Romans 2:5

II.        GOD’S RIGHTEOUNESS IS INHERENT; HIS NATURE:

  1. Revealed to man; Romans 1:16-17
  2. It is offered to man; Romans 3:21-22

    1.         To all who believe; Romans 3:22

    2.         It is given to all who obey; Romans 1:16

  3. God’s righteousness is seen in the death of Christ; Romans 3:25-26

 

III.       MAN’S RIGHTEOUSNESS COMES FROM DOING RIGHT:

  1. Faith “counted for righteousness”;  Paul’s writings:
    1. “Eis” =  “with a view to”; Romans 4: 3-5, 9, 22
    2. Faith when it is exercised produces righteousness; Hebrews 11:8-18 (8-9, 11, 17-18)
  2. Man is made righteous by God’s forgiveness; Romans 4:7; 1:16-17
  3. Being made righteous, man is to remain righteous; Romans 6:1-2
    1. The body is to be an instrument of righteousness; Romans 6:12-13
    2. Obedience is unto righteousness; Romans 6:15-16
    3. Man is to be a servant of righteousness; Romans 6:18
    4. Yield ourselves as servants of righteousness; Romans 6:19

       

      CONCLUSION:

  1.             A.       God makes man righteous through obedient faith; Romans 1:16; 1:5; 16:26

                B.        God is righteous and he requires man to be righteous; Titus 2:11-12
