INTRODUCTION:

            A.        People view God in many different ways:

                        1.         God of the Old Testament – “A God of vengeance and judgment”

                                    a.         Genesis 3:15

                                    b.         God gives the principles of His love; Exodus 34:4-7

                        2.         God of the New Testament – “A God of pure and unending love”

                        3.         Modern age – “God is dead”; “God is all forgiving”; “God is almost human”

            B.         What the Bible says about “Understanding God’s Love for Man”

 I.         GOD’S LOVE AS SEEN IN THE OLD TESTAMENT:

            A.        Seen as mercy and redemption; Exodus 15:13

            B.         Foundational principles revealed; Exodus 20:1-7

                        1.         The psalmist wrote; Psalm 86:15

                        2.         In spite of sin; Nehemiah 9:17

            C.         God’s love for Israel portrayed:

                        1.         A husband for a wife, a refused wife of youth; Isaiah 54:5-6

                        2.         A Father for a child; Hosea 11:1-4

                        3.         The Good Shepherd; Psalm 23

II.         GOD’S LOVE PORTRAYED IN THE NEW TESTAMENT: I John 4:7-16

             A.        God is “Agape”; I John 4:7

                         1,         Seeks and offers the best; John 3:16

                         2.         Demands both reward and retribution; Romans 12:19

             B.        God has always wanted the best for mankind; II Peter 3:9

             C.        God’s love demonstrated:

                         1.        Sacrificed His Son; John 3:16-17

                         2.        A covering for our sin; I John 4:10

            D.         God’s love for sinners; Romans 5:6-8

                         1.        God will not violate His divine nature; Isaiah 59:1-2

                         2,        God adopts and loves those who love and obey Him; Ephesians 1:3-6; 3:14-19

            E.         Jesus demonstrates love; Philippians 2:4-8

III.       WHAT GOD’S LOVE DOES FOR US:

            A.        Gives us peace; II Corinthians 13:11

            B.        Gives us contentment; Philippians 4:11

            C.        Gives us a reason to love others; I John 4:11, 19

            D.         Shows us how to be like Him and prepares us for eternity; I John 4:16-17; I Corinthians 13:1-3

CONCLUSION:

            A.         God’s love is freely offered to all; John 3:16

            B.         Those who want to receive the benefits of God’s love must accept Him on His terms;
