I.             THE COMPONENTS OF GAMBLING MAKE IT SINFUL:

                A.            Three components (elements) which define gambling:

                                1.            An uncertain, arbitrary event

                                2.            The wager (something of value) that is deliberately chanced on a                                                                             particular outcome

                                3.            A winner and a loser – the winner wins at the direct loss of the other                                                                     gambler (s)

                B.            Gambling preys on the weaknesses of others, it steals from the poor and gives to                                            the wealthy; Galatian 6:10; James 5:1-5

II.            BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES THAT OPPOSE GAMBLING:

                A.            Covetousness and greed make men gamble:

                                1.            Covet; “to lust after, long for, or desire something that belongs to someone else”

                                2.            Exodus 20:17 states:

                B.            What about his money spread on the table? Luke 12:15

                C.            “Gambling is sinful because of what it motivates men to do.”

III.           GAMBLING IS SINFUL BECAUSE OF THE FRUIT TEST:  Matthew 7:17-18

                A.            What fruit does legalized gambling bring to a community?

                B.            While all these exist in other places there is a reason Las Vegas is known as Sin City

IV.          OTHER REASONS GAMBLING IS SINFUL:

                A.            Because of what the Bible says:  Proverbs 13:11

                                1.            Take a look at these versions:  Research every English version

                                2.            Gambling is addictive; I Corinthians 6:12

                                3.            Example: Christian brother  in Michigan

                B.            Poor Stewardship; Woman who asked God to let her win the lottery

                                1.            Parable of the Talents: Use what you have been given; Matthew 25:26-28

                                2.            What greed can do; I Kings 21:1-4, 13-15

                C.            Gambling is wrong because of the influence principle;

                                1.            Gambling is a vice; and adult activity, must be 18 yrs. old to buy a lottery ticket; I Corinthians 8:13

                                2.            James wrote that we should keep ourselves “Unspotted from the world”

                                                James 1:27

                                3.            Paul told Timothy to “Be an example of the believers”; I Timothy 4:12

                D.            The Bible teaches that it is never right to do wrong; James 4:17

CONCLUSION:

                A.            Jesus taught; Matthew 6:20

                B.            Anything that promotes addiction to worldliness is sinful
