INTRODUCTION:

           A        “For I say”; Matthew 5:20

                      1.         “Dee-Kai-oh-soo-nah” = “Justice; generosity; piety; attribute righteousness; provision for justification”

                      2.         “pe-reec-sue-sa” = “it may be above; it may exceed”

            B.        Jesus draws the danger line – “except”; Matthew 18:3

            C.        Our topic; “Excelling in Righteousness”

 

I.          THE POINT OF COMPARISON:  Matthew 5:20

            A.        The righteousness of the religious leaders of the day:

                        1.         Scribes:  Educated copyist of the scripture

                                    a.         Lovers of praise and exaltation; Mark 12:38-40

                                    b.         Titles of honor; Matthew 23:5-9

                        2.         Pharisees:  “Straitest sect” of the Jewish religion; Acts 26:5

                                    a.         Zealous to make proselytes; Matthew 23:13

                                    b.         Gave tithes; Luke 18:12

                                    c.         Yet, loved the praise of men; Matthew 23:5-7

                                    d.         Sticklers for the law, yet violated; Acts 23:2-3

                                    e.         Observed traditions of the elders; Mark 7:3-8

            B.        Jesus said, “except”; Matthew 6:33

II.        CHRISTIAN RIGHTEOUSNESS MUST EXCEED:

            A.        As good as is not enough: Matthew 5:20

            B.        Christians must “out live” worldly lives; Titus 3:1

                       1.         Seek opportunity to do good; Galatians 6:10

                       2.         Put forth effort to be like the Lord; II Peter 1:5-7

III.       YE SHALL IN NO CASE ENTER THE KINGDOM:  Matthew 5:20

           A.        Kingdom of heaven on the earth; Matthew 16:18

                     1.         God determines who enters; Colossians 1:13-14

                     2.         Luke recorded; Acts 2:47

            B.        Heaven; the final dwelling place of the faithful; II Peter 1:10-11

                      1.         Prepared for the “prepared”; John 14:1-3

                      2.         Faithful; Revelation 2:10

CONCLUSION:

A.        No man is worthy:  Romans 5:8

B.        God expects you to excel in righteousness so that you can spend eternity with Him
